One portal for every HR task, from day one.

I designed the internal employee portal for AXA Biztech so employees, managers and HR teams can find, do and approve everyday HR work without asking for help.

The story behind the project

A new joiner, a leave request and no idea where to start.

Imagine your first week at a large company. You need to update your details, request leave and check your benefits. The portal is open, but every menu looks equally important.

  1. 01

    Who do I report to?

Reporting lines and business units were unclear across global, regional and local teams.

  2. 02

    Where do I start?

New employees had no guidance, so they raised HR tickets for simple tasks.

  3. 03

    Where is my team?

Managers had no single view of people, approvals and performance, and relied on workarounds.

Overview

A central platform for internal operations.

The portal brings HR services, employee records and real-time data into one place for thousands of staff across departments. The aim was to enhance productivity and let people complete HR tasks on their own.

My goal: make structure visible, guide new users, and give managers one clear view of their team.

The problem

The portal was growing faster than its experience.

Employees, managers and HR teams all faced the same challenges: unclear structure, fragmented workflows and little guidance on how to get started.

  1. 01

    Unclear structure

Hard to understand reporting lines, business units and regional teams.

  2. 02

    No onboarding guidance

Many new employees could not update details, request leave or find benefits without support.

  3. 03

    Complicated people management

No unified view of teams, roles, approvals and performance activity.

  4. 04

    Cluttered interface

Too many options and unclear priorities made simple tasks feel complex.

Process

The UX process behind the portal.

  1. 01

    Discovery and research

Internal research, HR and employee workflow analysis, drop-offs across key journeys, and pain points for employees and managers.

  2. 02

    Define the structure

Mapped navigation across HR systems and employee services, plus the data structure for records and permissions.

  3. 03

    Wireframe key flows

Low-fidelity wireframes of the dashboard, leave, payroll, benefits and performance flows for early validation.

  4. 04

    UX and visual design

Designed core HR workflows, internal branding, a style guide and a scalable design system for employee and manager tools.

  5. 05

    Test and refine

Usability testing with employees and HR teams, then iterations based on feedback.

  6. 06

    Handoff

Developer-ready assets and specifications, with ongoing support to engineering during implementation.

The solution

Making everyday HR management easier.

  1. 01

    Clear workforce overview

Attendance, performance, leave status and workforce insights appear on the dashboard at a glance.

  2. 02

    Simplified management

Fewer steps for onboarding, attendance, leave approvals, payroll coordination and records.

  3. 03

    Better data hierarchy

Profiles, reports and analytics are structured for quick access and confident decisions.

  4. 04

    Guided experience

Prioritised actions and clear navigation help everyone adapt quickly.

Visual design

Clarity, efficiency and trust.

A confident blue leads primary actions, supported by soft neutral surfaces and clear status colours for approvals. One component library and style guide keep employee and manager tools consistent, so the system scales without relearning.

Results & outcomes

Stronger engagement through a better HR experience.

Clearer data, faster workflows and more intuitive actions helped HR teams work efficiently and kept employees engaged.

Conclusion

By making structure visible and guiding people to the right action, the portal turned HR admin from a support request into something employees can finish themselves.
